'Those final few hours were brutal': British duo complete epic voyage in Down Under after paddling across the vast Pacific

A final 24-hour stretch. One more day up and down the unforgiving ocean. One more day of blistered hands clutching relentless paddles.

Yet after traversing 8,000+ sea miles on the water – an extraordinary 165-day expedition across the Pacific that included intimate meetings with marine giants, malfunctioning navigation equipment and sweet treat crises – the sea had one more challenge.

Strong 20-knot breezes off Cairns kept pushing their small vessel, their rowing boat Velocity, away from solid ground that was now painfully near.

Supporters anticipated on shore as an expected noon touchdown became 2pm, then 4pm, then dusk. At last, at eighteen forty-two, they reached Cairns Yacht Club.

"The concluding hours proved absolutely punishing," Rowe said, at last on firm earth.

"The wind was pushing us off the channel, and we genuinely believed we might fail. We ended up outside the channel and considered swimming the remaining distance. To at last reach our destination, after talking about it for so long, seems absolutely amazing."

The Epic Journey Begins

The British pair – 28-year-old Rowe and 25-year-old Payne – pushed off from Lima, Peru on May fifth (an earlier April effort was derailed by a rudder failure).

Over 165 days at sea, they maintained 50 nautical miles daily, paddling together in daylight, individual night shifts while her teammate dozed a bare handful of hours in a cramped cabin.

Survival and Challenges

Nourished by 400kg of preserved provisions, a water desalinator and an onboard growing unit for micro-greens, the women counted on a less-than-reliable solar system for limited energy demands.

For much of their journey over the enormous Pacific, they've had no navigation equipment or location transmitters, creating a phantom vessel scenario, almost invisible to other vessels.

The duo faced nine-meter waves, navigated shipping lanes and survived violent tempests that, periodically, shut down every electronic device.

Groundbreaking Success

Still they maintained progress, one stroke after another, during intensely warm periods, beneath celestial nightscapes.

They have set a new record as the first all-female pair to row across the South Pacific Ocean, without breaks or external assistance.

And they have raised more than ÂŁ86,000 (A$179,000) for the Outward Bound Trust.

Life Aboard

The duo made every effort to keep in contact with the world outside their tiny vessel.

During the 140s of their journey, they reported a "chocolate emergency" – down to their last two bars with another 1,600 kilometers ahead – but allowed themselves the indulgence of unwrapping a portion to mark the English squad's victory in the World Cup.

Personal Reflections

Payne, from a landlocked part of Yorkshire, lacked ocean experience until she rowed the Atlantic solo during 2022 establishing a record.

Another ocean now falls to her accomplishments. However there were instances, she acknowledged, when they doubted their success. Beginning on the sixth day, a route across the globe's vastest waters seemed unachievable.

"Our energy was failing, the desalination tubes ruptured, however following multiple fixes, we achieved an alternative solution and simply continued struggling with little power during the final expedition phase. Each time problems occurred, we simply exchanged glances and went, 'naturally it happened!' Yet we continued forward."

"Jess made an exceptional crewmate. Our mutual dedication stood out, we addressed challenges collectively, and we perpetually pursued common aims," she said.

Rowe hails from Hampshire. Prior to her Pacific success, she crossed the Atlantic by rowing, walked the southwestern English coastline, climbed Mount Kenya and biked through Spain. There might still be more.

"Our collaboration proved incredibly rewarding, and we're eagerly anticipating future expeditions collectively once more. I wouldn't have done it with anybody else."
