Hazbin Hotel's Showrunner Unveils Alastor and Rosie's Origin Tale Serves as a Huge Teaser for Season Three
Devoted viewers of the series at last received a long-awaited backstory in season 2's episode 4, called “It's a Deal.” This installment will probably spark extensive conversation and pose numerous inquiries about the essence of a certain demonic Overlord who appears far more powerful than any character previously understood. The new revelations feature a glimpse into the mortal existence of a fan-favorite character prior to his death and sentence to the underworld.
A Significant Hint for Upcoming Installments
The series creator shared a secret about “It's a Deal” – it acts as a huge hint for the third season. Additionally, she offered more insight into the methodology of creating the mortal forms of her demonic cartoon figures.
Warning: Spoilers for the fourth episode of Hazbin Hotel, season 2.
In the episode, a look back discloses that popular character Alastor the Radio Demon was a serial killer in his human life. Being aware he was destined for Hell, he established communication with the afterlife beforehand to secure a powerful role there. The charismatic leader, who leads the cannibal faction in Hell, promised Alastor he would become “the strongest Condemned Soul in Hell” in return for his eternal spirit.
This prompts an important query: In what way is Rosie sufficiently strong to elevate Alastor above all other Sinner Demons?
“The agreement between Rosie and Alastor is the initial building block in a larger narrative that encompasses a great deal, moving into season 3,” the creator explains. “Obviously that is a perfect question: How is she that powerful? The answer could be many things, but the answer is in season 3. I am thrilled for people to witness it.”
There’s no telling the duration viewers will have to remain for Hazbin Hotel’s third season. The studios have green-lit the third and fourth seasons, but the creator frequently notes that animation is a slow, lengthy process, and later seasons have no release dates yet. Nevertheless, she states holding off on specific information is a crucial aspect of maintaining season 2’s attention in the right places.
“The challenge of any kind of deal with infernal beings, or narratives that have mysteries, is giving people sufficient clues to be like, Something's up here, and then revealing that gradually, and allowing that be satisfying,” she comments. “So I am quite eager.”
Questions Answered in Season 3
The showrunner promises that season 3 will address the questions followers have been asking, such as why Rosie commanded Alastor to disappear for seven years, which weakened his power in the infernal realm.
“The whole seven years, and the deals these individuals are doing, and everything — it contributes to a bigger narrative,” she says.
Meanwhile, the Rosie/Alastor backstory episode provides another glimpse into how the core cast of Sinner Demons looked like as mortals, following after seeing another character's historical human form in the second episode. The creator explains that significant consideration was put into the visual creation of these forms.
“The mortal forms of the characters carry great significance,” she says. “They vary from appearing really different from their infernal version to looking almost identical. With Pentious, the first one we see, there was some internal discussion within the team between going with a design that symbolizes the personality, versus going with an option that's historically correct. We leaned toward making something that just felt like it was him.”
She says the biggest debate over the mortal look of Pentious was his long hair: “We were like, ‘Nobody typically had extended hair of that style in that historical period.’ But at the same time, we believe the silhouette is extremely crucial, and we also just felt he looked good. We were like, ‘This just feels right.’ We sort of gave the excuse that he lived in seclusion, so he just allowed his hair to lengthen. So there's always a way. As we create the mortal forms of these personas […] it is a very enjoyable process to investigate and figure out. I'm excited for fans to see more of the appearances of the human versions.”
Fresh installments of Hazbin Hotel the second season are released on Wednesdays on Prime Video.
