Going California Sober: Study Suggests Marijuana Could Help Cutting Down Alcohol Intake

New scientific investigation released in the American Journal of Psychiatry proposes that embracing a sober lifestyle involving cannabis method could substantially help individuals lower their alcohol consumption.

Research Methodology and Controlled Environment Scenario

Researchers from Brown University conducted a unique study where participants received cannabis cigarettes to consume before visiting a carefully constructed simulated bar environment.

  • Participants could choose to drink up to 8 mini alcoholic beverages.
  • The trial was conducted on three occasions with varying THC levels: high potency, moderate potency, and a 0.03% marijuana.

Great care was taken to mimic a authentic bar environment, complete with low light and beer taps to guarantee subject authenticity.

“We wanted to ensure that when presented with the chance, you would be really driven to consume alcohol,” explained the lead researcher.

Significant Results and Impact on Alcohol Use

Results showed a notable decrease in drink consumption after participants used cannabis:

  • Drink intake dropped by nineteen percent after consuming moderate-THC marijuana.
  • Reduction was even more significant with 7.2% THC cannabis, leading to a 27% decrease versus the placebo.

Broader Context and Additional Studies

Increased legalization has spurred a major surge in marijuana consumption, which has increased twofold over the past decade.

At the same time, alcohol use is at a record low, with numerous individuals turning to substitutes like marijuana.

Crucial to note that 40% of trial participants were diagnosed with alcohol dependence.

While cannabis could serve as a potential alternative to excessive alcohol use, scientists warn that more research is needed.

“It is premature to advise individuals in treatment for drinking problems, ‘Go ahead and replace marijuana, and it will work out for you,’” a study author commented.
