Female Victim Stabbed in Birmingham City Bus Stop Attack Dies

A woman who was stabbed in the neck during a random assault near a bus shelter within Birmingham has died, authorities verified.

The victim, aged 34 years, came under attack in Smallbrook Queensway, just outside the Bullring shopping centre, shortly before 21:00 GMT Friday evening, according to police statements.

Djeison Rafael, twenty-one, was presented at Birmingham court on Monday, facing charges for the attack.

Originally charged with attempted murder but following the woman's death the charge has been updated to include murder.

Law Enforcement Actions

The force said police personnel will remain in the downtown area on Monday providing public assurance, while detectives assisted the victim's relatives.

Detectives are appealing for witnesses who might have observed Mr Rafael, who is described as British citizen of Black ethnicity, and is believed to have been wearing grey athletic wear, dark headwear, athletic shoes and rucksack.

Attack Site Details

The stabbing happened near the Bullring shopping centre, opposite primary access point to Birmingham New Street station.

Police said they were treating it as "unprovoked attack" with investigators stating they were working to understand the motive behind.

Eyewitness Reports

An area worker, employed in the vicinity, described paramedic and police activity after completing her shift around 10 PM on Friday.

She characterized the location as "quite chaotic", adding that co-workers reported hearing loud disturbances around 9 PM.

"Many co-workers take public transport, ride the tramline... our safety is at risk fundamentally, here in the city centre."

Ashley Birks, twenty-five, resident of Stoke, mentioned visiting to Birmingham quite frequently to see his girlfriend who lives in the city, and was concerned about what had happened.

"It causes concern about my partner," he stated.

"She doesn't drive and works at all of the big music venues... considering a totally random act [happened], understandably, it's terrible."
