An Australian National Counted Among the Injured in New Year’s Eve Fire That Claimed the Lives of 40 in Switzerland's Alpine Resort
An Australian national is counted among the 115 people injured in a fire that tore through a crowded bar during a end-of-year festivities in the Swiss ski resort of Crans-Montana, killing 40 people.
Ministerial Statement on National Injured Person
The Australian minister for climate and energy, Chris Bowen, announced this morning that an Australian had been injured and was receiving medical and consular assistance.
“This is undoubtedly a horrific, horrific tragedy and I am confident every Australian extends their sympathies to the Swiss people, the victims and families,” the minister said during ABC RN radio.
He further stated, “It can be confirmed an Australian national was injured and is getting medical attention and the relatives are getting help, assistance from the Australian embassy. Further details cannot be shared for confidentiality obligations. The name of the individual is not being released at this point.”
Diplomatic Assistance and Continued Efforts
Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade confirmed on Friday morning it was providing consular assistance to the hurt national and their family.
A foreign affairs official said: “The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (Dfat) is providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian that has been hurt and is undergoing treatment following the fire. Due to our confidentiality duties we are not in a position to give more details.”
The spokesperson added, “The department is pursuing immediate inquiries with authorities on the ground to ascertain if any other Australians were impacted. We are prepared to offer diplomatic support.”

Details of the Tragic Fire
Local police reported the inferno ignited at approximately 1:30 am, local time, in a bar popular with tourists called Le Constellation bar, which is located in the centre of the resort in Valais.
Video of the incident depicts orange fire raging from inside the first-floor establishment. Screams and loud music can be heard, and several people were seen collapsed outside the building.
A number of those who perished in the fire have yet to be identified yet due to the seriousness of the burns.
Cause and the Fire's Origin
Investigators stated it was not a case of arson for the fire, which is believed to be the consequence of an unintentional act.
